Historic Winters Home Celebrated for Timeless Beauty and Preservation Efforts
Congratulations to Art and Kathy Winters for their continued dedication to preserving one of Downtown’s most cherished historic homes, located at 516 W. 3rd Street. Built in 1911 on 0.6 acres, the Winters House has remained in the extended family since its construction, serving as a proud landmark of both history and heritage.
A distinctive feature of the home is its fully functional shutters on all four sides—a rare architectural detail that sets the property apart. Each shutter features working black-painted hinges, carefully restored and maintained by the homeowners.
The Winters’ commitment to preservation extends beyond the shutters. The home recently received a new roof, spot tuckpointing was completed five years ago, and an iron fence and gate were added 14 years ago to enhance the property’s historic charm.
The landscape surrounding the home reflects the same thoughtful care, featuring vibrant window boxes, colorful flower beds, and two majestic pecan trees believed to be over 150 years old. Two Autumn Radiance maple trees, planted six years ago, now add seasonal beauty to the grounds.
Recognized for its curb appeal and meticulous upkeep, the Winters House has earned Yard of the Month honors four times in the past 15 years.
