🎃 Halloween Safety Tips! 🎃

Kids & Parents
• Plan your outing — Stick to familiar neighborhoods and well-lit areas. Kids under 12 should be with parents or a safe adult. Responsible kids 12 and older can go with responsible friends. Parents: know who your kids are with and what areas/routes they will be using. Kids: Don’t deviate from the plan without telling your parents and stay with your group.

• Stay connected — Make sure parents and kids know how to contact each other. In an emergency, call 911. For all non-emergency issues within the City of Washington, call 636-390-1050.

• Set a curfew — Within the City of Washington (and many other communities), anyone under 17 may not be out between 11:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. (Sunday–Thursday) and Midnight–6:00 a.m. (Friday & Saturday). Adults can be held legally responsible for allowing kids to stay out past curfew.

• Check costumes — Ensure costumes fit properly and don’t obstruct vision, breathing, or movement. Make sure you’re visible — carry a flashlight, wear glow sticks, or add reflective tape to your costume. Avoid using your cell phone flashlight — save your battery for emergency use.

• Pay attention — Stay aware of your surroundings and off your phone. Use caution around animals, pets can become nervous and/or defensive due to increased activity.

• Watch for traffic — Look both ways, use crosswalks or cross at a street corner, and never cross between parked cars. Don’t assume drivers can see you!

• Getting & checking treats — Only visit participating businesses, trunk-or-Treats, well-lit houses, etc. If the lights are off, skip that home. Never enter a stranger’s home or car. Have a parent or trusted adult inspect candy before eating it. (Parents: this is a great time to collect the “Parent Tax”)

Drivers
• Stay Sober & Safe — If use impairing substances during your Halloween festivities, plan ahead. Have a designated driver, stay with a friend, or celebrate at home. Whatever you do, don’t get behind the wheel.

• Teens — Pay attention, buckle up, and put the phone away. Make sure all passengers are buckled up. Parents: Talk with your teen drivers about safe driving expectations. If your teen has an Intermediate Driver’s License, make sure they follow its guidelines.

• Use headlights early — Turn them on before it gets dark to help trick-or-treaters see you.

• Slow down and stay alert— Expect heavy pedestrian traffic in neighborhoods and at Trunk-or-Treat events. Be prepared to stop for people entering the roadway unexpectedly. Be cautious at intersections and driveways, look twice before moving, especially backing up. Put down the phone and avoid distractions while driving.

⚠️Remember: Safety is everyone’s responsibility!! Kids are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than another other day of the year!!⚠️

Crews will be coming around November 3rd and December 1st to pick up your leaves. Please rake excess leaves to the curb but leave them in your yard. Leaves in the street and in gutters are both unsafe for motorists and a detriment for stormwater control and water quality.
