March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the countless contributions women have made to our communities and professions across the country.
Women have been part of the American policing profession since the 1800s, breaking barriers through resilience, dedication, and service. Their impact continues today as they lead, mentor, and serve in every area of law enforcement — from patrol and investigations to command staff and specialized units. For the first time in our department’s history, we currently have five female Police Officers, a milestone that reflects progress and the strength of those who continue to pave the way. At the Washington Police Department, our female staff is making a bit of history themselves. For the first time in our department, five of our eight female employees are commissioned officers!
We are proud to recognize all of the outstanding women who serve our community every day. Please join us in thanking these dedicated professionals for their service, leadership, and commitment to serving the citizens of Washington.

Yesterday, Deputy Ramirez was shot and killed during a traffic stop, and Deputy Hislope was shot and killed last night during the subsequent manhunt. Both deputies were proud U.S. Army veterans, and their service to this country and their communities will not be forgotten.
Two additional deputies — one from Christian County and one from Webster County — were also shot during the manhunt and remain hospitalized. Their conditions are not known at this time.
All four deputies put service to others before self with courage, pride, and integrity. We stand in solidarity with both agencies and the families of the deputies, and we ask our community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this tragedy.
