March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the countless contributions women have made to our communities and professions across the country.

Women have been part of the American policing profession since the 1800s, breaking barriers through resilience, dedication, and service. Their impact continues today as they lead, mentor, and serve in every area of law enforcement — from patrol and investigations to command staff and specialized units. For the first time in our department’s history, we currently have five female Police Officers, a milestone that reflects progress and the strength of those who continue to pave the way. At the Washington Police Department, our female staff is making a bit of history themselves. For the first time in our department, five of our eight female employees are commissioned officers!

We are proud to recognize all of the outstanding women who serve our community every day. Please join us in thanking these dedicated professionals for their service, leadership, and commitment to serving the citizens of Washington.

Severe weather preparedness week starts today.  Today’s topic is receiving weather information and having a plan.  It is recommended that you have multiple ways of receiving weather alerts.  It could be from activating weather alerts on your mobile device, receiving CodeRed notifications, weather radios, etc.  The city's CodeRed system will be activated and tested this week on Wednesday at 11:00AM during the statewide tornado drill. There is also information attached to understand the difference between a watch and warning. 2025 saw a lot of tornados and severe weather events. This week is a good time to prepare a plan, so everyone is ready when severe affects our area.

Our team earned 2nd Place at the annual MPRA Maintenance Rodeo, hosted by the Missouri Parks & Recreation Association. They competed against six talented teams representing their regions from across the state and finished just one point shy of the top spot!

Their skill, teamwork, and dedication to excellence were on full display, and we couldn’t be more proud of how they represented the City of Washington.

👏 Congratulations on an incredible performance!

City crews clean storm drains often along with regular street sweeping. You can also do your part by safely sweeping these drains clear in your neighborhood and keeping leaves, grass clippings, trash, and other pollutants from these areas. If you see an inlet covered with debris or is clogged, please reach out to the City Street Department. That way crews can get them cleared out to function properly and remove pollutants from entering the waterways.

On behalf of Chief James Armstrong and the Washington Police Department, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of Christian County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Gabriel Ramirez and Deputy Michael Hislope.

Yesterday, Deputy Ramirez was shot and killed during a traffic stop, and Deputy Hislope was shot and killed last night during the subsequent manhunt. Both deputies were proud U.S. Army veterans, and their service to this country and their communities will not be forgotten.

Two additional deputies — one from Christian County and one from Webster County — were also shot during the manhunt and remain hospitalized. Their conditions are not known at this time.

All four deputies put service to others before self with courage, pride, and integrity. We stand in solidarity with both agencies and the families of the deputies, and we ask our community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this tragedy.
