Even though it is a very low level of risk this afternoon and into the evening we still want to bring it to everyone's attention.  Most likely between 3:00-9:00PM this afternoon and into the evening.  Even though it is very low it is still a good idea to stay weather aware.

🚗 First Impact Presentation for Parents & New Drivers 🚗

Thank you for the overwhelming interest in this program! All 40 seats are currently filled for the First Impact presentation on January 15, 2026, at the Washington Public Safety Building.

If you were unable to secure a seat, we encourage you to sign up for the waitlist. We are also working to host a second session between now and summer break to meet the strong demand from families in our community.

This FREE program helps parents and teens understand Missouri’s Graduated Driver License Law and provides practical strategies to build safe driving habits, including limiting distractions, buckling up, and making smart choices behind the wheel.

👉 Join the waitlist here:
https://www.signupgenius.com/.../10C0D4EA5A92CA3FDC16

For more information, contact Washington High School SRO Greg Garrett (#263) at 636-231-2200 or ggarrett@washmo.gov

As a reminder, teens can also take advantage of the FREE reality-based driving simulator at the Franklin County Juvenile Office in Union. To learn more or schedule a session, contact Nikki Holdmeier at 636-583-7333 or nikki.holdmeier@courts.mo.gov

Why these programs matter:
According to the NHTSA, teen drivers are most often involved in crashes due to inexperience and risk-taking. Teens are also three times more likely to engage in risky behavior when driving with multiple passengers.

In 2023 alone:
• 2,611 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers nationwide
• 87,074 teens ages 15–18 were injured in crashes

Here in Missouri, SaveMOLives reports (preliminary) that in 2023:
• 133 people were killed in teen-driver-related crashes
• 47% of teens were speeding or driving too fast for conditions at the time of the crash
• 77% of teens killed were not wearing a seat belt
• 21 teens could have survived had they been buckled up

Together, education, experience, and responsible choices can make the difference. Let’s work as a community to keep our teens safe on the road.

Day Shift Summary
School is back in session after winter break!

Students: 😩 “Already?”
Parents: 😌 “Peace has returned.”

Whether you’re walking or driving, please slow down, stay alert, and help keep everyone safe. Here are some tips from our School Resource Officers to get everyone back on track going to and from school.

🚶‍♀️ Pedestrians🚶‍♂️

• Stay aware: Pay attention to your surroundings. Keep phone volume low or avoid headphones, as they can muffle important sounds.
• Use sidewalks: Always walk on sidewalks when available. If none exist, walk on the far edge of the road facing traffic.

Crossing the street safely:
• Use marked crosswalks or corners at an intersection. Never cross in the middle of the street or between parked cars.
• Obey traffic signals and cross only when permitted.
• At locations with a crossing guard, wait until the guard stops traffic and signals you to cross.
• Do not enter a crosswalk if oncoming traffic is too close to reasonably yield.
• Look left-right-left before crossing and make eye contact with drivers. Do not assume they see you.

🚗 Drivers🚗

• Minimize distractions: Put phones down and focus on driving. Expect the unexpected.
• Follow speed limits: Pay attention to posted limits, including school zones, which may lack flashing yellow lights.
• Yield to pedestrians: Always yield the right of way to pedestrians in both marked and unmarked crosswalks. Obey the directions of the crossing guard if one is present
• School busses: Obey flashing lights and stop sign when activated.
• Adhere to safety guidelines established by your child’s school when picking up or dropping off.
• Obey stop signs and electric signals:
Stop signs are called stop signs for a reason. Rolling through or just tapping your brakes doesn’t count. You have to stop which means all movement has ceased, hence the name STOP sign. A yellow electric signal means: Slow down. The light is about to turn red, so prepare to stop. Not “floor it and hope you beat it”.
A red electric signal means: Stop and remain stopped until the signal turns green. Enjoy the music on the radio and practice your air guitar skills or enjoy a sip of coffee from one of our many wonderful coffee shops. Go when the light turns green, not prior to.

Parking/Stopping restrictions:
DO NOT
• Park or stop inside of a crosswalk
• Park within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.
• Park or stop in a way that interferes with traffic in order to pick up your student.
